Why does ulcerative colitis cause constipation in some patients?

Colitis: Diarrhea,often with the passage of blood,is more common, but constipation can occur especially while on treatment or if the intestines react with more spasm and less irritability when on a low roughage diet. However a gastroenterologist is better qualified to answer your question.
