Barrett's Esophagus: During the pathogenesis of Barrett's Esophagus, your esophageal epithelium or lining changes to an intestinal type in a process called metaplasia to protect itself from a reflux acidic environment and other factors we do not know. After treatment with proton pump inhibitors, your doctor hopes no dysplasia will show on biopsy and your epithelium returns to esophageal lining, less cancer risk.
