Swallowed air: Hiccups are caused by inadvertent swallowing of air. Its possible that it may be a nervous habit, but your cousin should think about what is it that she does just before it happens, to get a handle on why its happening. If all ekse fails, think about a throat or swallowing evaluation - several specislists can evaluate this - ENT, speech therapist, or your GP, to help figure it out
