Hiccups, treatment: In addition to holding the breath, (unproven) options include straining down as if to have a difficult bowel movement (valsalva maneuver), sipping cold water, and pulling the knees up towards the chest then leaning forward. If hiccups are frequent, then it may be due to an underlying problem like heartburn/acid reflux. Treatment with an over-the-counter acid reducer may help in that case.

Hiccups: Agree with earlier input. If that doesn't work, acupuncture and certain prescription medications may abort lengthy and painful bouts of hiccups.
