Not dangerous: Cold sores are caused by herpes virus that resides in the nerve. Herpes simplex is extremely common. It could be passed on when a baby is kissed or in kindergarten. Initial infection is normally uneventful and not noticed. If it is caught as an adult, it is more severe causing fever etc. Various triggers cause a flare up. Sun light, certain foods, stress, fever, etc.
