Usually not: Most patients with TMJ do not even need a TMJ MRI for adequate diagnosis. A brain MRI would only be indicated in very rare cases where other unexplained, non responding, or neurologic symptoms are present. Once again this is an extremely rare scenario.

Brain MRI vs TMJ: Each imaging modality provides specific types of information. The MRI of the brain can help detect cysts, tumors, bleeding, and other intracranial pathology. The MRI evaluation of TMJ can help detect internal derangement of the articular disc and soft tissue tumors.

Maybe: The symptoms of TMJ disease overlap with multiple other pathologies such as facial pain and numbness (Vth nerve injury), facial weakness (7th nerve) ,different types of headache, diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, and more. An MRI of the brain may help narrow down the possible other causes of your symptoms.
