Why would an unborn child have a dilated kidney and be 1 mm bigger than the other?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Interpreting studies: It is not rare to find a prenatal ultrasound that reads"dilation of renal pelvis" or to have one kidney be slightly larger than the other.Since the fetal environment, and demands on the kidneys differ than that of life after birth, I look on this as just something to follow. I get a followup kidney US at 4-6 wks, and most are normal. If not, it suggests a blockage in urine flow.
