Cold sores: Cold sores are painful blisters that form on or near the lips and inside the mouth. They are caused by an infection with a virus called “herpes simplex virus.” Some studies of topical agents unrelated to acyclovir that are available over the counter in the United States (eg, benzalkonium chloride [Viroxyn], docosanol [Abreva]) have suggested benefit, whereas others have not.
