Cognitive effects: The newer antipsychotics (second-generation antipsychotics) theoretically are supposed to assist with improving cognitive impairments in various mental health conditions, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, it is possible that a slowing of processes can occur with such medications. Efficacy and tolerability depend on the medication, side effect profile, and patient response.

See answer: Antipsychotic meds target symptoms in serious psychiatric disorders. They improve cognitive functioning by treating an underlying thought disorder. They are not to be taken primarily to aid executive function issues. If any slowing of mental functioning occurs while on an antipsychotic, doctor should review to lower/adjust dose. I hope this helps.
