Gastroenteritis: I don't think that the horribly smelling stool is of concern but the loose stools of viral gastroenteritis usually resolve after a week although it can be followed by an irritable bowel syndrome. If significant diarrhea is prolonged the stool should be cultured to check for pathogens that need treatment. In the meantime avoid harsh roughage, take kaopectate (kaolin and pectin) as needed.
