Carseat: It is recommended that all babies face backwards until age 2 AND at least 20 pounds. Infant carriers have weight and height parameters on their sides to help gauge if a "convertible" car seat is a safer option.

To save his life: if he is facing up front ,and in case of an accident and the air bag inflated, it will kill any child sitting facing the front. actually a lot of states forbid placing any children with or without special seat in the front passenger seat for the same reason.

Never before age 2yr: Rear facing allows the crash forces on babies head to be cushioned by the seat, forward facing throws the head forward and stretches the spinal cord.This can result in spinal cord injury or sudden death. I took care of one that was quadriplegic because of this. It's not safe to forward face before 2 in normal kids, and I recommend parents keep them rear facing as long as the seat allows it.
