Yes, if recommended: by a doctor for an abnormal heart rhythm then it may be deemed necessary to keep you from heart failure or worse. At your age of 74, I am guessing that the doctor is trying to keep you from having to take medicines for the rest of your life to control the rhythm, given that you are probably already on several other medicines.
