Cause & effect.: The swelling is getting worse because of the DVT; when venous blood flow is impaired, the blood pools in the leg (no way to get back to the heart). Ultimately proteins & fluid will leak out and collect. To my knowledge, the amount of swelling has no correlation with the clot getting bigger or moving. Rather, the more extensive the clot initially, the more the leg will swell.

DVT/leg swelling: The swelling in the leg following DVT is due to the clot blocking or impeding the return of venous blood leading to swelling. Leg swelling will not cause DVT or cause the clot to detach. If you have had a DVT there is a risk that swelling could be permanent. You should wear support hose, elevate your legs when possible, keep physically fit, keep the weight down and stay mobile.
