Don't Rx a lab: Early iron deficiency often does this, but remember that lab reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either end. Especially, don't get all worried about trying to adjust a lab value back into reference range; something is always outside.

RDW is the mark: of variability of red blood cells in vivo -- very high RDW indicates there is a constant transition of hemocytes from the bone marrow to the peripheral blood, then metabolized in the spleen. High RDW implies that there is an issue with the production line, where deficiencies in iron, vitamin B, and leukemia are potential causes. Thanks for trusting in HealthTap.
