A member asked:

What is most likely way strep pneumoniae gets into bloodstream? i know it's rare but wonder- can u get this germ from a sneeze? doorknob? kissing?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Uncommon: This bacteria is present in our air and surroundings but it does not cause infection all that easily. The most common first site of infection would be a Pneumonia from breathing in his germ, which is rare in young people(older folks get it more often). From lungs it can get into blood steam. So this latter phase is even rarer and only happens when patient is not treated with antibiotics promptly.
