Varies: if one received zithromax...on the one hand it concentrates in the ear, on the other 30% of strep infections are resistant. It stays around longer than the 5 day duration of taking it. Follow up by 10 day and not hearing sees reasonable. Mostly hearing comes back in a few days. Residual inflmmation can keep hearing a problem for most of a month.

Oh! I empathize!: Usually it takes several weeks for excess fluid to reabsorb and normal hearing to return. This is why it's so important for children to be treated for ear infection and effusion (fluid). They can miss out on a lot during the time they're hearing impaired. Sometimes oral steroids help speed up the process and, occasionally tubes are placed in the ear drum to allow fluid to drain.
