Neat question: This is known as the paradoxical cold response. Usually, hot and cold sensations from the skin run along DIFFERENT nerves to the brain--hot via "slow" fibers, cold via "fast" fibers--allowing it to easily distinguish between the two. However, cold sensation can actually run along the SAME fibers as hot, tricking the brain into thinking something is cold (or hot) when it's actually hot (or cold).
