Not Necessarily: A failed root canal can happen for multiple reasons. An endodontist can determine if the tooth should be re-treated or extracted. Molars are actually much stronger than other teeth though the top surface has a high incident of decay in children that do not brush well. Root canal treated teeth can be weaker however and need a crown to protect them from breaking.

Possibly: That being said, it is better to save the tooth if at all possible. Molars are as strong as other teeth, but experience more wear and tear due to their purpose, which is grinding and crushing your food. Root canal therapy sometimes requires retreatment.

Endodontist consult: Saving your natural tooth should always be your first choice. See an endodontist for exam and your treatment options.
