A member asked:

Was checked for pe with chest x-ray, ctscan at er, 3 wks postpartum. neg results, would they have recognized cardiomyopathy? (shortness of breath)

Possibly: Cardiomyopathy is typically on the radar screen of ER physicians, when a woman 3 weeks postpartum comes in with the symptoms you are describing. If you want to be certain, give them a call and ask, if they checked for cardiomyopathy.

Possibly not: You tend to find things you are looking for. A CT scan for PE, gives a very detailed look at the pulmonary arteries, to see if there is evidence of a "clot" within them. Though you can see the heart and its chambers on CT, there is still much information like heart wall motion, that you do not see from this. The heart may appear enlarged on CT, but evaluation from a cardiologist would be needed
