A bit of an odd: pattern of pain. Shooting often implies a nerve pain and the pain goes in the pattern of where the nerve goes. There is a nerve that goes OUT from the spine and DOWN the leg (sciatic nerve; sciatica). MRI would show a disk; x ray would NOT. Up and down might be something OUTside of the spine and then it is tender on touching it.
