TmJ sounds: Listening to the sounds of the jaw is one part of evaluating the health of you jaw. A quiet joint can mean that the structure of your disc is normal, but there can still be abnormality in the muscles which can be painful and needs treatment. Frequently a splint, or a nightguard is the first step in treatment.

Yes: Yes, some of the most severe TMJ problems have no joint noise. Other TMJ symptoms include joint pain, limited oral opening, chewing pain, etc. Make sure you are evaluated by a TMJ-orofacial pain expert.

Indeed: Noise is just one part of a TMJ evaluation. There are many issues that can occur there that are silent. This is a good question to ask your examining dentist for a full awareness of what is going on with your particular joint.

See oral surgeon: See your dentist or get a referral to an oral surgeon for a definitive diagnosis. Were condyle shots taken open and closed? A nightguard just separates your teeth to prevent grinding, but you need to know the etiology of the problem.
