Several reasons: in some, because the inflammation has destroyed the bowel and blockage or scarring occurred. In others, it is quite the opposite, in the most common, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, this disorder of bowel motility is characterized by times of diarrhea and times of constipation. http://www.nerdpocalypse.net/irritable%20bowel.html
