Fall?: Given your age and being female, acute pain in the mid back and side could be due to a fragility fracture. Do you have osteoporosis? Sometimes these fracture occur without a fall. Even coughing can be the cause. I would see your doc.

Possible fracture: This could be a compression fracture of a vertebrae and a rib from osteoporosis and some trauma. See a doctor to get a diagnosis.
