Stress most likely: then irregular sleeping habits, substance abuse (caffeine and /or alcohol is a BIG one), poor nutrition, anxiety. If you have tried the melatonin religiously for 1-2 weeks, and it still doesn't work, I would go with temazepam (Restoril), amitriptyline, or Zyprexa/ Seroquel (quetiapine) before I consider other hypnotics. And if you are still insomniac, then go get checked by healthcare provider for thyroid.
