Slim: There is a small chance that herpes simplex virus I or II can be transmitted when lesions/sores are not present. It's possible that infected people "shed" the virus without any symptoms. Herpes is not spread by contact with saliva. It is spread by contact with skin where herpes virus is present. It is unlikely, even with a lesion on the lip that kissing someone on the neck will transmit the virus
