Husband has strange black raised mole in umbilical.noticed it 5 yrs ago.went to general surgeon & said remove w/out biopsy at first.is it right to do?

Yes: For a mole, it is better to remove the whole mole and send it to a pathologist for examination. Biopsy serves no good purpose, what good will a part of the mole in the umbilicus do?

See a dermatologist: Begin with exam by an expert. You failed to describe details which help us reach decisions about how to proceed. Does it need to be removed? What is to be gained by any procedure? Biopsy is often much easier than wide excision. If biopsy shows melanoma you need wide excision, wider than with routine excision. If biopsy finds a benign lesion, then you are done. Usually biopsy requires no stitches.
