A member asked:

If you tolerate a procedure well yet are irritable while versed is wearing off, is this a paradoxical reaction, a rebound effect or a normal reaction?

Could be either.: Versed is a rapid acting benzodiazepine sedative. As such, it has all the qualities of similar drugs. Post procedure pain, other medications given during the procedure, the root cause of the procedure cold all have a bearing on your mental state in recovery. Be sue that this fact gets into your medical record, and be extra careful if you are prescribed a benzodiazepine or similar medication..

Define irritable: It depends on what you mean. Some sedatives, notably benzodiazapines like versed, cause disinhibition in low doses ( like while wearing off). This can manifest as restlessness or agitation, particularly in elderly or debilitated people.

Any one: Most likely a paradoxical rxn happens during administration. A rebound effect or if what you mean is that the med is wearing off and unmasks the pt's natural disposition is also possible. Some people are nicer after the sedation and some get a personality changes. Mostly though people remain themselves. I also believe that what is presently going in their lives affects how they tolerate/react.
