Past and Present.: Without trying to put too fine a point on it, Beaus lines are simply your body's way of memorializing an event that had an effect on your nail roots. This event can be any number of diseases, disorders, the taking of some medications just to categorize most of them. The distance from the line to the back of the nail (where it meets the skin) is an indicator of when the event happened.
