Urinary retention: Enlarged prostate can lead to difficulty in emptying bladder. Inability to void can lead to kidney damage. Depending upon degree of difficulty, alpha blockers can take several days to relax prostate. 5ARIs can take up to 6mo to take effect. For immediate relief, doc can place catheter either via penis or above pubic bone. Catheter can stay in place or placed intermittently. Avoid allergy & cold rx
