Here are some...: Current care for your 90-yr grandpa's voiding difficulty should be focused on how to proactively protect his bladder from further damage by unwanted bladder overdistention with indwelling catheter or intermittent cath, not drugs which would not help much at this time. So, ask urologist with common sense beyond drug and surgery.

Urinary retention: Enlarged prostate can lead to difficulty in emptying bladder. Inability to void can lead to kidney damage. Depending upon degree of difficulty, alpha blockers can take several days to relax prostate. 5ARIs can take up to 6mo to take effect. For immediate relief, doc can place catheter either via penis or above pubic bone. Catheter can stay in place or placed intermittently. Avoid allergy & cold rx
