A member asked:

If a person has an operation for an enlarged prostate gland then is it typically the case that a catheter is needed temporarily during the post-operative period or does it depend on the way in which the surgery is performed?

Cather is normal: to prevent urethral swelling.

Both. The TUR-: -usually needs a catheter for a while. Also if depends on the surgeon’s preference. Ask your surgeon about this. Hard to give a definite answer as there are so many variables.
