D-Dimer: A positive D-dimer just means the body is in the process of breaking down a clot but it doesn't mean it's necessarily an important clot. A bruise or recent surgery can cause it to be elevated and false positives are possible as well. The specificity of a D-dimer for pulmonary embolism or leg clot is only about 50%.
