Yes: the itching can continue for weeks after treatment. Try a calamine lotion, over the counter antihistamines such as Zyrtec or Benadryl (diphenhydramine). Also a topical hydrocortisone cream can be helpful for itching. Remember to repeat the treatment in about 2 weeks and treat your family members as well.

Yes: Yes, permethrin kills the scabies but does not relieve itching and inflammation. The itching should slowly improve over the coming days if the medication was used correctly and if indeed scabies was the cause of the complaint.

Normal: It can sometime take a week or more for the itching to subside because the itching is due to a delayed hypersensitivity reaction to the mite, mite feces and eggs. Topical corticosteroid cream will often help reduce persistent itching.
