Difficult situation : IVC Filter is not intended to be a replacement for medical management of DVT. But, if there is a high risk of a pulmonary embolism, PE, and anticoagulation (blood thinners) is contraindicated, placement of a filter is recommended. Depending on how high is the risk of bleeding, catheter directed thrombolysis and/or thrombectomy can be considered as a treatment option for symptomatic DVT.
