Hard to say: Meningitis can be caused by bacterial or viral infections. When a patient is not responding to antibiotics it means the infection may be viral or the bacteria is resistant. A culture of the spinal fluid should grow most typical bacteria out in 48 hours and they can then be tested for resistance. Good luck to this young adult! http://www.meningitis.org/disease-info/types-causes/viral-meningitis
