Hard to say: Meningitis can be caused by bacterial or viral infections. When a patient is not responding to antibiotics it means the infection may be viral or the bacteria is resistant. A culture of the spinal fluid should grow most typical bacteria out in 48 hours and they can then be tested for resistance.
