A member asked:

Would there be a reason why a provider would think a case of meningitis would be a viral case if the csf cell count was 80% neutrophils?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Culture?: CSF fluid is inspected for white cells, red cells, protein levels and glucose levels. Maybe the other indicators were more viral in nature initially. Generally, if most of the white cells are neutrophils a bacterial infection is suspected. The CSF fluid should be sent for culture and after 48 hours if nothing grows then you feel more comfortable calling it a viral infection.
