No side wffects: The MRI is a safe test that uses a magnet instead of X-rays. Because of this there is no radiation exposure. It is one of the best tests for deteriorated or herniated disk problems. Tests to get an answer are not always necessary. The MRI is usually done only if surgery is being considered , if your symptoms don't fit a specific pattern, or if the treatment isn't working.

Back pain has multiple etiologies besides spine problems .Chronic back pain(over 3 mos ) should be worked up with plain X-rays as well as an MRI of the spine.
