Common: Gum infection are quite common. The wires and brackets aren't removed when you have your teeth cleaned. The hygienist will clean around them. It is important that you follow the directions that your orthodintist, your general dentist and your hygienist gave you to keep you teeth clean and prevent gum infections during your braces. This means frequent brushing and flossing, and usually fluoride.

Unknown: There is no connection between taking the wires off or not taking the wires off during a dental hygiene visit and a gum infection. If you have an infection you should see your dentist in order to diagnose the source of the infection. It may have nothing to do with your braces.

Not very: You don't have to have the wires removed to keep your teeth clean or to have them professionally cleaned. If you practice good oral hygiene & see your dentist regularly it's unlikely to occur. However, infections can pop up for any number of reasons at any time. All it takes is some local irritation & the bacteria take over to cause an infection. Caught early it is easily treated.

Failure: For proper professional cleaning orthodontic appliances do not have to be removed. Failure to keep teeth immaculately clean, especially between teeth where toothbrush can't reach, can result in damage to gums and underlying bone. Review orthodontic hygiene w your orthodontic specialist ; your family dentist. More frequent cleanings and/or care of periodontist may be in order.

January?: January was 12 months ago. You should be seeing a dentist for professional cleanings at last once every six months. Some orthodontic patents should be cleaned every 3 months. If it was truly january sice your last cleaning it is no wonder that you ave developed an infection.
