Pain or itch?: when the skin is broken, such as with a bite, it can be red and swollen and itch due to local reaction or it can be painful due to an infection. If painful, oral clindamycin should help. If itching without pain, icing, oral Benadryl (diphenhydramine) (which can cause drowsiness), topical calamine lotion or hydrocortisone may help alleviate itching and result in decreased swelling.
