Feel the temperature: Simply feel your toe and compare it's temperature to the same toe on the other foot. If it is cold and not even close the other toe's temperature, you need to get to the emergency room now. If the toe is in severe pain, get to the emergency room. If you have recent history of bumping the toe and the toe is in a bruised condition, then you are probably fine.
