A 47-year-old female asked:
for a bone scan what is the purpose of doing some scans before/during the injection of the tracer? i thought that the scans were after it was absorbed

Easy imaging...: It sounds like you are referring to a three phase bone scan (flow, blood pool, and delayed images). Early images can provide more information depending on what your condition is. Early images are helpful to look for osteomyelitis, RSD, and some other conditions and can help determine if a condition is acute or chronic.

Radioactive "dye": A bone scan is usually used to assess the whole skeleton for cancer spread, to look at specific bone sites for fracture or for bone infections. The patient receives an injection of a radiolabeled substance that is mostly incorporated in to areas of high bone turnover. A camera to detect the radioactive decay then acts to count the amount of activity. Areas of high decay are more fully evaluated.

No: Not all osteoporosis drugs "build bone." some medications will slow down the breakdown of bone while others will actually build bone. Talk to your doctor about which one is appropriate for you.

Pinky toe: Although it may not be structurally the most "fragile" bone in the body, the most often broken bone in the body is the 5th (or pinky) toe. In some sports, like sailing, the pinky toe is broken in 50% of athletes who are involved in the sport for more than 2 years.
