A member asked:

I have a fracture of the first metacarpal. i have 2 pins. the break hasn't bonded, yet the doctor wants to remove my pins. should i tell him not to?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Hand fractures: Radiographic signs of hand/finger fracture healing often lags behind actual healing. While your x-rays might not show complete new bone formation, it is typically advised to remove pins after 4-6 weeks to prevent infection and allow you to start range of motion exercises to prevent stiffness. Some type of removable splinting is still recommended to protect the hand as it continues to heal
