N-acetylcysteine,: called NAC, is the name for the active ingredient in Mucomist. See Wikipedia. You can obtain capsules OTC (600 mg). It is effective for loosening secretions if taken orally--and it is good for you--it helps prevent lung inflammation, and is a free-radical scavenger. Interestingly, it is also the treatment for acetaminophen poisoning. Guaifenesin is hardly better than a placebo.
