A member asked:

I was diagnosed with bipolar at 15. my father is bipolar.however a dr once said i had bpd.is it common to be diagnosed w/bipolar when you are bpd?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Both diagnoses: may be accurate; however there is overlap with symptoms of bipolar dis. and bpd which can easily lead to confusion without a careful history. Bipolar disorder generally responds well to medication. Relationships and job functioning generally more stable than bpd. Competent mental health professionals may disagree so try to keep the focus on your personal goals and treatment. I hope this helps.
