Exposure or...: U may have had cornea exposure as you slept creating a very dry eye surface with pain. Another plausible explanation is a corneal erosion that results from loosening of the adherence of the corneal epithelium as you awaken, due to drying. The latter is quite painful. A thick artificial tear ointment instilled in the eye prior to sleeping will generally help. Better is Muro 128™ ointment. C eye doc
