A member asked:

My last upper scope, showed mild chronic inactive gastritis. is there a way to resolve this so it isn't a chronic condition? if it is inactive is it still damaging? is there a cancer risk?

Inactive means . . .: Inactive means that it does not require any further treatment (think of it as scar, after you cut your skin. Once you've treated the cut, the scar may remain, but requires no additional attention). The best thing that anyone can do to reduce their cancer risk is to not smoke and minimize alcohol. Since you had gastritis, I would also try to avoid aspirin based products (includes advil/alleve)

Gastritis: Unfortunately, this is a fairly ambiguous result ... However, it is normally seen in patients who have a bacterial infection called Helicobacter Pylori. You might want to follow up with your GI doctor to see if a simple breath test might be appropriate to test for this infection. If so, treatment is usually a simple cocktail of antibiotics and acid suppression. Hope this helps!

Talk to doc: You need to discuss this with the doc who did the scoping. Usually inactive means that there is no active inflammation or corrosion. Mild chronic gastritis is a rather vague term perhaps meaning that there may be some scarring but there is no active process affecting your stomach. The question is what caused the gastritis in the first place?

Eliminate h.pylori: Presence of chronic gastritis usually the result of presence of H.pylori chronically infecting the stomach. Frequently this leads to ulceration, in the cardio esphageal region, bringing in stem cells to repair the damage. The helicobacter toxins can then convert the stem cells to malignant ones. It is important to control the bacteria by diet and at times triple antibiotics
