A member asked:

Is there a lower risk for blood clots when taking ortho tri cyclen lo? safer than yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol)? can't seem to find how much hormone is in ortho tri cyclen lo

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Clot risk: The risk of clot is slightly higher in YAZ (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) do due the type of progesterone in it. It has nothing to do with the dose really. If for example you had a clot on Ortho tri cyclen, no one would suggest you use tri cyclen lo instead. Blood clot risk also lowers after 3 months of use just like it does for menopausal women on hormone replacement therapy. Every OCP in the US is low dose except for one.
