Can a person die from pneumonia even if they receive antibiotics and get plenty of fluids and rest but the pneumonia is severe?

Unfortunately yes : If the bacteria is resistant to the antibiotic, or in the case of influenza is a virus that doesn't respond to abx, then yes a patient may die from severe pneumonia because the lungs are unable to bring oxygen to the blood.
