A member asked:

Is 10 years of heavy drinking long enough to cause a b12 deficiency? have brain fog, tingling, numbness, etc. do you put much stock in the idea that b12 deficiency is responsible for these things? i know it's somewhat controversial.

Vitamin B-12: deficiency is one of the common causes of peripheral neuropathy, which causes numbness and tingling in feet and hands (stocking/glove distribution). It also causes impaired cognition. Vitamin B-12 deficiency is not uncommon and is associated with heavy alcohol use. Anyone with the symptoms you describe should definitely have Vitamin B12 level checked. I would be happy to order this.

Drinking and foggy: If you have been drinking heavily for that long you need to have a complete liver panel and a serum ammonia level to be sure you haven't developed cirrhosis with hepatic encephalopathy (foggy brain function) B12 deficiency can also be associated. I would be glad to see you in consult and evaluated your liver function for this problem

I would say so: Drinking alcohol, even in moderation, can have profound effects on the way your body absorbs vitamin B12 in the stomach.Often heavy drinkers consume too many of their calories from booze, neglecting important nutrients. The symptoms use describe can certainly be caused by B12 deficiency. See you doctor for eval and measurement. Do everything you can to stop drinking now; start with AA. Good luck!
