A member asked:

Does benadryl (diphenhydramine) help a swolen sore throat not caused by allergies?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Meds for sore throat: I don't recommend Benadryl ( diphenhydramine) for a sore throat "not from allergies." Usually a sore throat is from a viral or bacterial infection, or from sleeping with an open mouth. Occasionally, it is from acid reflux coming up into the chest . Benadryl adds to the dryness and irritation and makes infections last longer, so taking it can hurt you. Use pain meds; add antibiotics if needed.
