A member asked:

How can a mixture of benadryl (diphenhydramine) and maalox soothe a sore throat? my pharmacist told me to try it. i always thought those were used for different things.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Time honored remedy: A mix of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and maalox has been used for years to ease the discomfort of mouth sores. Sometimes a third ingredient, viscous Lidocaine (by prescription) is added. My only cautions would be that Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can be sedating if you use enough - and some people might be allergic to the mix with lidocaine. I trust you have been tested for more serious concerns, like strep.
